Wild Betel (Lá Lốt) - Piper sarmentosum

Wild Betel, known as "Lá Lốt" in Vietnamese, is a sprawling tropical ground cover that thrives in deep shade. The peppery leaves are a staple in Southeast Asian cooking and are traditionally used as a wrap for grilled meat in the popular Vietnamese dish Bò lá lốt.

The plant itself grows exceptionally well in hot, humid conditions with lots of shade, making it a perfect ground cover for a food forest with mature trees. They produce small white flowers that beautifully contrast their dark, glossy leaves.

Propagation: Propagating Lá Lốt is extremely easy, especially in warm weather. Just dig up a few root segments, plant them out in a shaded area and keep them regularly watered for the first few days. They should push out new growth in no time.

CAUTION: Once established, Lá Lốt can spread fairly vigorously through it's roots (part of the reason why it's such a great ground cover plant). Avoid planting near property lines as it may start spreading into neighboring land.
