Mexican Sunflower Cuttings - Tithonia Diversifolia

from $12.00

Mexican Sunflower is a fast growing, resilient pioneer plant that has become quite popular in the food forest/agroforestry scene. It is mainly grown as a chop & drop plant as it contains lots of important nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorous. It’s rapid growth rate provides ideal shade and protection in the early stages of a food forest and of course the beautiful blooms attract many beneficial pollinators. The leaves can be fed to livestock as a supplemental feed.

Maintenance: Because Mexican Sunflower grows so vigorously, it’s recommended to prune it back every few weeks, especially during the rainy season. This plant can quickly get out of hand and start smothering the same plants it’s meant to feed and protect. It has a clumping nature and will expand over time, so give it some distance from important plants.

Site Preference: Mexican sunflower does best in full sun and drier soils. It doesn’t tolerate shade or standing water for long periods of time and will reset itself if waterlogged for too long.

Propagation: Takes very easily from cuttings if provided some water in the beginning. Just make sure the cuttings are firm in the ground and not loose.

All cuttings are 6-9 inches in length.
