Millipede Castings

from $15.00

Millipede castings are the backbone of all our food forest systems! It’s a natural slow-release fertilizer high in active fungi and chitin, both of which build soil resilience and help suppress harmful nematodes.

Ecology: Millipedes play a crucial role in the ecology of tropical forests. They are primary decomposers and spend the majority of their time eating decaying organic matter on the forest floor. They especially love eating mushrooms and have an amazing symbiotic relationship with them. Fungi are the only major organisms that can break down lignin (the primary component of wood) and make it more digestible for millipedes and other arthropods. In turn, millipedes consume the mushrooms and get covered in spores in the process. These spores then hitch a ride to the rhizosphere when the millipedes crawl down to escape the hot sun. The rhizosphere is where soil organisms and plant roots live, and it’s the perfect place for fungal spores to germinate. Millipedes ensure the survival and propagation of fungi by spreading their spores and fungi ensure the survival of millipedes by breaking down hard wood into a palatable food source. It’s this fascinating symbiotic relationship that make millipede castings so special!

Uses: Millipede castings can be used in a variety of ways. Add it to potting mix, fertilize house plants, sprinkle around the base of trees, inoculate compost piles with active fungi or make compost teas.

Note: This product is harvested directly from our own food forests and stored in cool, dark conditions. It may contain small arthropods and other insects. Don’t be alarmed, this is a good thing and means that there is plenty of moisture to keep soil life and fungi alive.
